Replacing Fiberglass and Metal
Traditionally, exterior aerodynamic fairings, bumpers, and large interior panels were made from stamped metal or heavy fiberglass composites. Today, these are being rapidly replaced by heavy-gauge vacuum formed plastics like ABS and TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin).
- Weight Savings: TPO panels can be up to 40% lighter than their fiberglass equivalents.
- Impact Recovery: Unlike fiberglass, which shatters upon impact, or metal, which permanently dents, advanced TPO plastics have "memory." Minor impacts will cause the plastic to flex and return to its original shape.
- Class-A Surfacing: Modern co-extruded plastics feature a high-gloss acrylic cap layer, providing a flawless, paint-like "Class-A" finish right out of the mold, entirely eliminating the need for an expensive post-process paint shop.
