The Hidden Cost of Disposable Dunnage
For decades, automotive and industrial manufacturers relied on corrugated cardboard and disposable foam to ship sensitive components between assembly plants. The hidden costs—environmental waste, constant repurchasing, and high damage rates—are staggering.
The Shift to Custom RTP
Returnable Transit Packaging (RTP) utilizes heavy-gauge vacuum forming to create highly durable, custom-fit plastic trays that circulate through the supply chain for years.
- Zero-Defect Delivery: Trays are formed with bespoke pockets that exactly match the geometry of the part (e.g., an engine block or a sensor), preventing any movement or vibration damage during transit.
- Stacking & Nesting: A well-designed RTP system features trays that stack securely when loaded with parts, and nest tightly inside one another when empty. This maximizes truckload efficiency on the return journey.
- Automation Ready: Custom trays can be manufactured with strict dimensional tolerances, allowing robotic arms and automated retrieval systems to easily pick and place parts from the tray without human intervention.
Material Considerations for RTP
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and thick-gauge ABS are the preferred materials due to their immense impact resistance. For electronic components, we utilize Anti-Static (ESD) coated plastics to prevent electrostatic discharge from destroying sensitive microchips during transport.
