The Demands of Refrigeration

Manufacturing the inner liners for commercial and residential refrigerators is one of the highest-volume applications of vacuum forming in the world. These massive, seamless plastic shells must withstand extreme cold without becoming brittle, and they must be perfectly hygienic.

High-Gloss HIPS

The industry standard for refrigerator liners is a specialized grade of High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), often co-extruded with a high-gloss top layer.

  • Thermal Resistance: This material maintains its impact resistance at sub-zero temperatures, preventing cracking from heavy frozen goods.
  • FDA Compliance: The material is strictly formulated to be food-contact safe, ensuring no chemical leaching occurs over decades of use.
  • Seamless Hygiene: Because the entire inner liner is vacuum formed as one continuous piece of plastic, there are no seams or joints for bacteria to hide in, making it incredibly easy to clean.

Polyurethane Foam Adhesion

Behind the scenes, the back side of the vacuum formed liner is injected with expanding polyurethane foam for thermal insulation. The plastic we select is specially formulated to bond aggressively with this foam, creating a highly rigid, thermally efficient composite structure that gives modern refrigerators their structural integrity.
