Beyond Single-Sheet Forming

Standard vacuum forming involves a single sheet of plastic. But what if you need a hollow part, like an air duct, a custom fuel tank, or a lightweight structural panel? Enter Twin-Sheet Thermoforming.

The Twin-Sheet Process

This highly advanced technique involves heating two separate sheets of plastic simultaneously in a specialized machine.

  1. Two sheets (often of different colors or materials) are heated to their forming temperature.
  2. Two opposing molds (a top mold and a bottom mold) are utilized.
  3. The molds press the two heated sheets together under high pressure, while vacuums pull the sheets into their respective mold cavities.
  4. The heat and pressure cause the two sheets to fuse together permanently along the pinch-line, creating a single, hollow, seamless component.

Engineering Advantages

Twin-sheet forming creates components with incredibly high stiffness-to-weight ratios. It can seamlessly replace blow molding or rotational molding for large hollow parts, offering better control over wall thickness and the ability to insert internal structural reinforcements (like metal threading) between the sheets before they are fused together.
